Labeling Foods
Last edited by OrangeClouds115, February 15, 2007
For shoppers who don't buy direct from the farmer, the food label is the quintessential way to discern what they are eating. Where did the food come from? Does it contain genetically-modified ingredients? Is it healthy?
Food labels - though recently improved with the addition of allergens and trans-fats - are grossly inadequate. Here are some changes we would like to see:
- GMO's - A consumer has the right to know when a food contains genetically modified ingredients.
- Added sugars - Food labels should tell consumers how many grams of added sugars a food contains, with a maximum Daily Reference Value of 40g for a person eating a 2000-calorie diet.
- State and Local Labeling Rights - States should have the rights to pass food labeling requirements. We oppose the National Uniformity for Food Act.
- Structure/Function Statements - Junk food should not have misleading labels that make it sound healthy.
- Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) - Consumers have a right to know where their food came from.
